A private wine retreat

The cellar beneath a guesthouse needed to accommodate wine tasting, games and quiet retreat. An integrated wine cooler became central to both function and appearance.
With limited ceiling height, only essential areas receive a suspended ceiling. Brick-clad walls conceal services while recalling the character of traditional wine cellars.
Detailed project description
A wine cellar, or mancave
Wine cellar – a private retreat
Budaörs
Designing a modern wine cellar and games room in Budaörs
A year after moving into their completely remodelled family home in Budaörs, the clients approached us with another exciting brief: rethinking the cellar beneath the guest house. The aim was to create a multifunctional space that would serve as a wine cellar, a games room and a private retreat.
A modern approach to wine cellar design
The owner wanted a “mancave” where he could spend time with friends and family, relax and recharge. Our wine cellar design drew inspiration from the traditional cellars of the Budaörs region, combined with modern interior decoration.
The result is a distinctive yet understated space, expressing the atmosphere of a classic wine cellar in a contemporary way. Integrating the wine cooler was particularly important: it became a defining visual feature as well as a functional element.
Spatial planning and technical challenges
Because the guest house sits above the cellar, water and drainage pipes were clearly visible below the ceiling, creating a considerable aesthetic challenge. The solution was carefully planned partial concealment: rather than installing a full suspended ceiling, we hid the building services only where necessary.
As ceiling height was already limited, it was important to prevent the room from feeling oppressive. We therefore created column-like false walls in the corners, clad in brick slips, which both conceal the pipes and reinforce the character of the wine cellar.
Games room design and functions
Functionality and comfort were equally important in designing the games room. The space includes:
- a table for cards and board games
- a compact kitchen area
- a TV wall for shared relaxation
- and a separate toilet
This versatile layout allows the room to function both as a social space and as a peaceful place to unwind.
The project is an excellent example of how wine cellar design, games room design and considered interior decoration can come together in a harmonious concept. The result is a distinctive, practical space that fits perfectly with the family home as a whole and with the owner’s lifestyle.
